STEP 1 - Complete the Online Course

Complete the self-paced CERT Basic Hybrid course, hosted by the University of Utah and created in conjunction with the California Office of Emergency Services (CalOES). This includes the triage module, which is required for our program.

Registration on the course site is required. The course may be taken at any time but must be completed before attending the in-person classes. Plan on at least 12-14 hours for the online portion.

STEP 3 - In-person Classes

Next you'll need to make sure you attend all of the scheduled skills days.  This is where you put into practice the principals you learned online.  We'll cover things like:

• Light Search & Rescue skills • Fire Extinguisher Use • Disaster Medical Operations skills • Review of the key points of the online training • Folsom team-specific information • Preparation for the final exam and disaster simulation • Q&A

Schedule and Locations

Classes are held at Folsom Fire Station 35 on Glenn Dr.  The final disaster drill and exercise is held at the El Dorado Hills Fire Training Center

Attendance

You will attend all classes to receive your Certificate of Completion.

You must complete the online course, attend all in-person classes, and complete the Disaster Exercise to complete the Academy. If you are unable to do so, you may petition to return and finish with the next available academy.  You may not participate in the Disaster Drill until you have completed all prior coursework and in-person skills days.

Optional Personal Gear

The academy provides a backpack with the required personal protective equipment. The items below are optional personal purchases some students and members choose to add.

North American Rescue Combat Application Tourniquet (CAT) Can be purchased from several retailers online but make sure it is the real NAR CAT.  Beware of Amazon copycats.

Ansell Microflex Blaze N48 7mil Disposable Nitrile Gloves Most any nitrile glove will work. We like bright orange ‘blaze’ or light blue as black can make it harder to see blood and other bodily fluids.
